# 09-01 School LAN is unusable

# Problem

I cannot use the school's network for any practical demos. The school blocks almost all ports that are not used for HTTP traffic. Unless I want to make things really complicated, I need to be able to control the clients via SSH (default port 22) in order to start the programs and configure the software. Blocked ports prevent me from SSH tunneling so that isn't an option. Furthermore, I do not know what the IP address of the clients are in the LAN and I also can't set up any static IP routes for DynDNS access. What also will be an issue is that there is a fair chance that the WiFi is in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, even though 5 GHz is vastly preferred.

# Possible solution

# Buy a cheap router

If I create my own LAN then I do no have to bother with the school's firewall and static routing etc. There are used dual band routers on Ricardo for less than 10CHF. New ones cost 25 CHF on digitec.

# Hotspot

It is also possible to set up a hotspot (access point) from my mobile phone. What obviously would be nice, is that I wouldn't need to spend money on a router. The issue is that I am not sure whether I really can set the WiFi to the 5GHz frequency band. My custom OS apparently has support for it (there is the option) but I cannot select it for whatever reason.

# Further actions

I think I will just go with the router option, since it seems to be the cleanest solution for a reasonably low price. I will try to get something via Ricardo and otherwise get the cheapest one from Digitec.
